Port of Visby

Region Gotland together with Copenhagen Malmö Port (CMP) has developed cruise-based tourism in the Baltic Sea and on the island of Gotland by building a cruise berth in 2018. The berth can receive large, modern cruise vessels in a safe, smooth and convenient way. Two vessels of 340 metres can dock simultaneously at the berth, which extends 530 metres (including abutments) into the sea.

The environment and the Baltic Sea are important to us. The vessels will therefore be able to discharge their waste water into our treatment plant on land, thus helping to prevent any additional contamination of the Baltic. An equalising tank with a capacity of 1,200 cubic metres is being built beneath the land area by the berth.  The sludge can then be used in biogas production on Gotland.

The partnership between Region Gotland and CMP sees Region Gotland financing and building the new cruise berth. CMP will then be Region Gotland’s tenant, charged with the task of selling Gotland as a destination to the cruise lines. The contractor for the construction project is Danish company Aarsleff A/S.
